Midweek: silk and sarongs, and a finish from With Strings Attached

The Villa Rosa blog hop begins on Thursday.   I'll post all the links.   Visit the guest bloggers and register for prizes!

Unusually warm weather and sunshine Monday and Tuesday (73 degrees!)  meant walks at Sun Lake Forest Preserve and Illinois Beach State Park.  I heard the cranes bugling and got a photo of one of the pair as it flew overhead.

A follow up to Monday's post about Liz....her daughter called Tuesday morning to say that they'd found more Rotary things and would the club members like them? (Bob was a 50-year Rotarian.)   I know what ...

Weekly update: convention and quilt raffle from With Strings Attached

The AAUW-Illinois convention was a great event! The meeting rooms, a/v, and food service at the Embassy Suites were just right.   The speakers were top-notch.

AAUW CEO Gloria Blackwell provided an update on AAUW’s national efforts for equity for women and girls – economic security, safety and welfare.    AAUW-IL lobbyist Jenni Purdue provided an update about our state public policy efforts.

Sharmili Majmudar, executive v.p. at Women Employed.  WE advocates for women’s economic power to close the wealth gap for gender and race.  Barriers to equity include salary history, forbidding employees to discuss their pay, limiting equal ...

Midweek: lunch with friends, intermittent sunshine, and something new from With Strings Attached

Waukegan Area Branch members

Saturday's AAUW meeting was the annual Fellows Luncheon.   The Waukegan and Deerfield branches invite women who have received AAUW fellowships to study in the U.S. (specifically, the Chicago area) to tell us about their research.

Matilda Adebove from Nigeria is studying educational psychology at Loyola.  She belongs to a religious community and told us that her International Fellowship freed up funds for seven other sisters to pursue educational opportunities.

K.C. Palisoc from the Philippines is doing research in data science and public policy at the University of Chicago.  She was formerly an economist ...

I'm back and Country Jane is with me! from Sue Daurio's Quilting Adventures

Did ya miss me?  Oh my, it's been so long since I've had a stomach flu.  I think as you get older it may take a little longer to get through things or maybe we're just getting around all those germs again but it took me 4 days to get over that stomach virus.  Daytime TV is the worst and I'm hoping I don't have to watch any for a very long time!!  But I'm back to feeling human again and Country Jane, which is Country Quilters of McHenry's 2023 Opportunity quilt, is ...

Weekly update: AAUW convention, raffle results, and reading from With Strings Attached

It was so wonderful to be in-person for the AAUW-IL convention!  (The 2020 convention was cancelled. The 2021 convention was by Zoom.)   I picked up Karen and Erika for the drive to the Doubletree in Naperville, about 75 miles away.

Waukegan Area Branch attendees were Karen, Jo-An, me, Jolanta, and Erika.

AAUW CEO Gloria Blackwell gave the keynote via a live link. AAUW awarded $5m in fellowships and grants to 260 scholars and programs in 2021 and will award $6m in 2022.  600 teen girls and 350 caregivers participated in the AAUW STEMed program.  1,000 women took the online ...

Out of focus from Art In Search

It is very disjointed here at the Swanekamp abode. On Black Friday, my husband went shopping with a friend. Two days later, the friend called and said he was Covid positive and he did not feel all that well when shopping. Immediately, my husband went to the top floor of our Cape and I disinfected the whole downstairs. The top floor has 1 bedroom, a full bath, and his office. He tested negative until Wed.- 5 days later, when a home test revealed his positive and followed it up with a PCR test, positive. He has been stuck up there ...

QAYG, Boys Quilt, and Guild Raffle Quilt from Elaine Adair Pieces

Quilts are getting MADE during this "staying at home" business.   I'm using the "twin strips" method for this QAYG, a small boy's quilt -  my blue fabrics lean towards "nautical", but that word is seldom heard of in western Nebraska, so I bought one yard of this cute TRACTOR print, the only fabric purchased.  I made 4 blocks at a time, and that also used adequate but unloved FQs for the back.  Backing and batting were cut 8 in. and the block finishes at 7.5.  Setting is 6 x 8 blocks, a good size for toddler.  I'll ...

Putting It All Together from Quilting, Piece by Piece

dsc04708If you haven’t already finished your Single Irish Chain block, these are the instructions for completing the block

1. As with the initial instructions for the four-patches, I encourage you to lay out your pieces in the way the block will end up: the solid white block in the middle; the four solid blue blocks at North, South, East, and West; and the four-patch blocks at the corners.

Pay particular attention to the four-patches because it’s easy to get them turned! One WHITE square should be on the actual corner of the block and the other white square ...

…But Wait, There’s More! from Quilting, Piece by Piece

dsc04696-1So, you went to the Guild meeting and picked up your Single Irish Chain kit, and looked at my blog post and said to yourself, “Surely, she doesn’t expect me to cut up everything into little squares and do all that tedious piecing.”

You’re right, I don’t expect you to do all that “tedious piecing.” (And, just to show my age, “don’t call me Shirley.”)

If you know shortcuts, I expect you to use them… as long as the Irish Chain blocks come out to 9.5″ square, no one but you will know how you ...

Sinnissippi Quilt Guild Show from As The Feathers Fly

This weekend was our quilt guilds bi-annual show. I quilted 3 customer quilts and the raffle quilt.

The first one was appliqued by my friend Barb and won Best Appliqued quilt. It is Baltimore Autumn from P3 designs.

It is custom quilted. I used Superior SoFine and Bottom Line threads. It has a lot of pebbles and ruler work.

This next one is called Confetti. This quilt took a 3rd place in the pieced category.  It is a Judy Neidmeir pattern. Again it was custom quilted. It has a lot of ruler work and ditch quilting. Thread is Superior SoFine ...
